Health, Wellness and Emotional Wellbeing of Staff, EDL 900

Diet and nutrition, as well as exercise and movement, have been shown to be related to overall emotional wellness. Nutritional deficiencies, unhealthy diet, and a sedentary lifestyle can exacerbate mental health symptoms and emotional challenges. This course explores how diet, nutrition, and movement affect emotional wellbeing, the components and significance of emotional well-being, stress reduction strategies, and ways in which to incorporate healthy habits into daily life.

One-credit course expectations:

The learner's participation for one credit will be verified by:

  1. Completing the two categories of written assignments.
    1. At the end of each layer the learner will submit a few well written but concise remarks to address the layer's content.
    2. A one page summary reflection that is written upon completion of all of the modules incorporated in the selected UND course. End of Course Reflective Statement Requirements are provided. The final reflection must be sent as an attachment to the instructor of record at
  2. Checking the time stamp in the module indicating the amount of time the student spent studying the contents of the module.

Two-credit course expectations:

  1. The learner must complete one or more Authentic Practice Sets completing a minimum of 15 hours of additional work, beyond the requirements for the first credit, for a total of at least 30 hours for two credits.
    1. The additional 15 additional hours is focused on preparation of a portfolio exhibit that documents the design, implementation, and appraisal of an Authentic Practice Set applied to the content of the course.

About Your Instructors

Brad Goodell Brad Goodell

Dr. Brad Goodell is a graduate of the Minnesota School of Professional Psychology, where he earned a doctorate in clinical psychology. His bachelor's degree is from Hamline University in psychology. While at Hamline, he also completed a certificate in conflict management. Dr. Goodell's post-doctoral work has been through the University of Minnesota Medical School's Program in Human Sexuality. He has a strong background in assessment and testing and also significant experience providing individual therapy to adults, couples, adolescents, as well as working with families.

He is a partner and wellness consultant for Integrated Wellness Partners Group, LLC, where Dr. Goodell leads the Healthy Worker Program -- a wellness program designed to assist employees to better manage emotional health-related issues. He also does data analysis, strategic planning, as well as workshop and course development.

He has experience with clients from diverse backgrounds and under-served communities including working with at-risk adolescents in school settings. Goodell is an ally and advocate for LGBTQ issues and an expert in issues associated with transgendered individuals. He considers his sensitivity to diversity to be one of his primary strengths as a professional.

Ann Lowry Ann Lowry

Ann Lowry, PhD, has over 25 years of experience as an educator and organizational consultant. She is the owner and president of Ann Lowry and Associates. Lowry also serves on the faculties of The University of Minnesota College of Continuing Education (teaching Business Communication) and The College of Pharmacy (teaching Health Literacy and Communication).

Her PhD is in organizational communication from the University of Minnesota, her M.A. is in interpersonal communication from the University of Northern Iowa, and she has a Bachelor's Degree in communication and English from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In addition, she has completed several doctoral-level courses in Mind Body Medicine from Saybrook University in San Francisco.

As an educator, Lowry taught and trained on many topics, including healthy leadership, social marketing, business communication, presentational speaking, interpersonal communication, conflict resolution and negotiation, organizational behavior, managing groups and teams, promotional communication, managerial psychology, diversity, and intercultural communication, among others.
